One of my students had a great concept for a video game. After further work on it, he went in a steampunk approach to the setting. Well, I liked it before that but with steampunk, even better! So I was inspired to work on this steampunk cowboy sketch. Only a little time in but I may try to finish and paint it.

Liked the way the face started to come together. I limited myself to 30 mins for this just trying to work on broad shapes of color first. Comments always welcome as I try to get this technique to not only look good but NOT take forever.

Closing in on the finishing touches, painting is a lot more involved and exciting than vector. With vector I have to plan out every shape in advance, with the painting I just get to do it!  Now if only the painting were resolution independent. Should have this one finished this week.

I'm enjoying the process as much as I can. Spent some time creating brushes and playing with the settings. Then started rendering. Not a bad morning I would say. Looking forward to getting to work more on this. I will keep  posting updates as I go. Now on to the yard work.

One of my favorite parts of drawing is the initial sketching. I enjoy working out the poses for the characters and the composition that will help tell a story. There is so much energy and creative excitement during this phase that it just makes me happy. This is the start to a new illustration for my wife.......she does keep me busy doesn't she?

So, I noticed on a whim that if I added eyes to hood, she seems to become the antagonist. But without the eyes, which I think looks better, she becomes the protagonist.

I sketch for a current feelance job. I liked the characters and how I grouped them. Hoping this gets approved quickly and then I will ink it and fix a few problems I see in some of the feet.I will attempt, and by that I mean do, to post more in the upcoming year. Ok, here are the sketches from the Dr. Sketchy event. I really was trying to work on my gesture and proportion. I did not realize how out of practice I was. The poses were mostly 5 mins with a couple of 20 mins poses as well. The theme for the evening was Mardi Gras.

Strange thing about the SouthEast, when winter comes the wind picks up and the clouds roll in. It seems like there is nothing but grey cloudy days. Work on the new website is progressing which is why I have updated the blog with these colors and the new header image. Website will hopefully be live in a couple of weeks, after that it will be on to the 2009 marketing materials. :)
